about

I was fortunate to have a few months free time in the summer of 2019 to experiment with a more studio first songwriting approach. This yielded three new songs which gathered dust till summer 2020 rolled around.

At this point, I had some more free time though it was a lot less carefree. It was also my last few months in North Vancouver. So I tried to make the most of it and wrote the rest of the songs for the album, utilizing the same "writing in the studio" approach. Though the approach was new, included in this batch of songs was one based off an instrumental I started in 2016.

When the summer ended I had moved to Toronto, packing up my songs with me. In 2021, I had some time to polish up these songs. Mixing, arranging, and singing have all been difficult skills for me to learn. Each album I make is like a program of study, full of trial and error. I'm often left with the feeling, I could do better but the program has to end sometime so that we can review what we've learned and start off from a better place next time.

So the album for me becomes a snapshot of my creative life. If you listen to this album, I hope you can hear my striving to express myself and that wherever I've fallen short, you might hear something interesting in my journey.
